Can You Be Rich Without Money?

Is it possible to be rich with little or no money?

Years ago I worked with an amazing woman, Kristi. From comments she made, it sounded like she and her husband lived paycheck-to-paycheck. Yet between her family life, community life, church life, and all around being a loving-giving person, her life was rich. She was actively involved in all her son’s activities (he was between five and nine when I worked with her). She helped at his school. She coached his soccer team. She took bike rides with him. Encouraged him to be involved in his community and with his friends. She was a motivating force and integral to following through and making A Night to Remember (I believe it was in 2014) — a night to remember, both for the special needs young adults who participated in their special prom and the young adult volunteers who were their dates — a reality.

The Love of My Life has been all over the financial spectrum. Regardless of where he’s been at any given time, his life has been (and continues to be) rich with experiences.

So while I have a seriously effed-up relationship with money (the understatement of all time), I am inspired by these two.

I didn’t think to ask Kristi about her attitude towards money, but I have asked the LoML. He views money as a tool. Like any tool, it has its time and place. His overall philosophy and belief is “It always works out.” Whatever a particular “it” may be. When things go well, he accepts that and continues on his path. When things don’t go well, he accepts that and performs spot check. If he feels he is on the correct path, he continues forward; if not, he switches.

While I have a long way to go before I’m free of money’s insidious hold on me, I am now cautiously hopeful it will happen. The realization it’s possible to be very rich without money is huge step in the right direction.

To know it’s possible to be rich in life experiences. Rich in friends who love you and care for you (regardless of your bank account). Rich in love. Sounds good to me.

Think about it. When you love unconditionally, you’re giving a priceless gift. When you’re loved unconditionally, you’re receiving a priceless gift.

Yes, you can be rich in so many ways. However, the ones that don’t involve money don’t pay your bills, so it’s important to be rich that way too…haha.

Sheila, I agree. It’s the challenge of the tangible vs. intangible and finding the balance. Be nice to have that balance. Working on it. Living on a sailboat seems to be helping. lol
