Life is Like a Diet

c.67 life dietA well balanced food diet consists of a majority good-for-your-body edibles with a bit of wiggle room for those that aren’t necessarily healthy, but can be an occasional indulgence. Do this and over the long haul, you will remain fairly healthy, your weight pretty stable, and you won’t feel deprived.

A well-balanced life diet includes nurturing all the parts that make up your whole — mental, physical and spiritual. This means tending to your health, relationships, thoughts, spirituality, experiences, avocation, and finances, while tossing in a few indulgences, a bit of out-of-your-comfort-zone experiences, and a smidgeon or two of way-out-there experiences.

When you go on an extreme diet — eating only one food, or no food, or only protein, or only carbs, or no carbs, or you make a soup of cabbage, canned tomatoes and celery, or you stand on your head and drink through a straw, you’re not going to make it for the long haul. Any progress you make down (as in the numbers of the scale or tape measure), will come back up with a vengeance and then some. Why? Because you’re depriving your body of what it needs to function. Neither your body nor psyche will tolerate deprivation over the long haul without serious damage.

When you spend too much time focused on one aspect of your life, while ignoring others, whether it’s focusing on all the things you can’t have, can’t do, can’t afford thus feeling sorry for yourself, or you are determined to get something “at any cost,” you’re like a pressure cooker. You are building up a head of steam. Feel sorry enough or hold yourself on a tight leash long enough and you will eventually explode. Be it by eating too much, spending too much money, or doing something else to excess and in the extreme.

Rather than seeing how much you can deprive yourself and for how long, or focusing on only one or two parts of the whole that make up who you are, find the point where you have balance. In that balance make sure you have less of what you don’t want so you have the time and space for more of what you do want.

ok, I am throwing away the leash but I do not think I can give up my salty crunchy greasy chip binges every once in a while

The great thing is you don’t have to give up your salty, crunchy, greasy, just relegate it to the wiggle room category. That way, when you do partake of the SCG as an occasional indulgence, it will be a special occasion, you’ll savor it, and you won’t consume extreme quantities.
