Oh So Popular

c.271w oh so popularJust got an email reminding me there’s a relatively easy way in which you (and I) can:
    Earn brownie points
    Perform a heroic act
    Save lives
    Perform a Mitzvah
    Do a good deed.

We can accomplish all of the above with one simple action ~ donating blood.

Blood! It’s something we all have, and even though most of us can share, not all blood is equal in popularity. (O+ being the most popular, AB- the rarest.)

    c.273w blood typesInteresting factoids

*Blood comes in a total of eight flavors, O+, O-, A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+ and AB-, the pluses ranking higher than the minuses on the popularity-meter.

*O is considered the universal donor, meaning those blood cells can be donated to anyone.

*AB can donate to other AB’s, and receive from all others.

    *A can donate to A’s & AB’s while B’s can donate to B’s and AB’s.

*The rarest of them all is AB-, with B- a close runner-up.

*Plasma is the liquid all the other things float around in

*Red blood cells ~ circulate oxygen around in your body

*White blood cells ~ protect against disease

    *Platelets ~ clot your blood.
c.272w donating bloodA person can live without
    *air for three minutes
*shelter (in the snow) for three hours
    *water for three days
    *food for three weeks.
As for blood, well, you wouldn’t last three seconds without it.

    Elixer of Life

There are many tales regarding the Elixer of Life, that magical, mystical beverage which when consumed offers you eternal life. While blood doesn’t actually give you eternal life, without it, you have absolutely no life (at least in this dimension). Even in Vampire lore, the undead require blood, so it makes sense the living need it even more.

If you really take a liking to this and feel incredibly inspired, you can donate whole blood every 56 days. (Here’s a link to other blood donation types you can make.)

n.44bw Kathy V. thank youMany thanks to Kathy V.  for sending me the link to LifeSource’s Mothers of May campaign. (Thank you for reminding me how, even when I think I have nothing to offer others, I actually do.)

Love the different “flavors” of blood. Still laughing. You are quite right, of course, donating is easy, takes little time and you usually get a brownie and orange juice afterwards. Still, peeps don’t do it. I won’t go out of my way to do it but I’ll tell you what. Next time you are visiting a friend in a hospital you can offer to donate blood. You might have to wait a half an hour but they will take you. Awesome! Great message sent to us by those magical doodles!

Tammy ~ I’m sitting here laughing. Considering how much blood is used in a hospital, it it never occurred to me one could donate blood at one. I always donated at blood banks or blood mobiles. And while the brownie doesn’t do it for me, I’ve always enjoyed the juice and cookies (and on special occasions donuts) I’ve gotten after. Haha Always a delight to hear from such a witty woman writer as yourself. Thanks for stopping by.

i’ve always wanted to give blood, but i’ve never weighed enough.

Catherine, I remember the first time I tried to donate, I was too young. Multiple times I was too anemic. When I was finally able to actually donate that very first time, I was thrilled. Here’s hoping maybe in the future you’ll get to experience that thrill. :-)
