Sharing the Words of Others

a.209w monster tulip headHere’s a collection of words gleaned from books read, movies seen, or comments overheard.

    A To-Do List
To Do List, she thought. Throw Maria’s wedding. Return stolen flamingos. Clean up the Venus. Get Lisa Livia’s money back. Kill somebody named Casey Dean. She looked out the window to the dock where Shane and Carpenter were conferring with their boss. Sink Brenda’s boat. Write my goddamn column. Believe in Shane when he tells me what I’m dying to hear. She went to the pantry to get the wedding cakes. ~ Jennifer Crusie

    Being Yourself
Be yourself, everyone else is taken. ~ Oscar Wilde

“You’re my sister,…I told you I’d always take care of you.”
“I know. … But taking care of and caring about aren’t the same thing.” ~Rachel Gibson

    Doing the Right Thing
Damn, but McKenna hated moral dilemmas. She hated it when what she had to do was the direct opposite of what she wanted to do. Really, really wanted to do. ~ Emily Carmichael

c.281w donuts & muffinsDonuts and Muffins
Donuts are the guys that make you drool. …They’re gorgeous and crispy and covered with chocolate icing and you see one and you have to have it, and if you don’t get it, you think about it all day and then you go back for it anyway because it’s a doughnut ….Whereas muffins just sort of sit there all lumpy, looking alike, no chocolate icing at all. …Doughnuts are good…for one night. …But then the next morning, they’re not crisp anymore, and the icing is all stuck to the bag, and they have watery stuff all over them, and they’re icky and awful. You can’t keep a doughnut overnight. …But a muffin is actually better the next day. …Muffins are for the long haul and they always taste good. They don’t have that oh-my-God-I-have-to-have-that thing doughnuts have going for them, but you still want them the next morning. ~ Jennifer Crusie

Just because you lost all your hopes and dreams doesn’t give you the right to keep Alex from having any of her own. ~ Behind the Waterfall

    Fallibility of Humans
Only the dead are perfect. It’s the living who are all too human. ~ Robin J. Smith

    Good and Evil
“Why is there such evil in the world?”
    …”Because there’s such goodness.”
…”I don’t understand,…are you saying that if there’s one, there must be the other?”
    “Seems so.” ~ Julie Garwood

Hatred is an acid….It eats you up inside. And the only person it hurts is you. ~ Diana Palmer

    Keeping Quiet
Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble. ~ Proverbs 21:23

    Learned Optimism
Contentment with the past, happiness with the present, and hope for the future. Learned optimism. ~ Jennifer Crusie

a.210w monster heart faceLoss of Love
Losing someone you love isn’t something you get over–or under or around. There are no shortcuts. It’s something you go through, and you have to go through all of it, and everyone goes through it differently. ~ Nancy Atherton

    Overcoming Fear
He wrote about his nightmares so he could own them, then lived life as if there was nothing of this earth that he feared. ~ Lori Handeland

The quote “Be yourself; everyone else is taken” is by Oscar Wilde, that incredible British poet and playwright, and novelist.
    Your list is marvelous.

Patricia~Thank you so much for stopping by and giving authorship to the Oscar Wilde quote. The post has been updated and he’s been credited. Woo-hoo!

    Kim Tackett - June 4, 2014 - 4:31 pm

We use that Oscar Wilde quote in our branding work. In fact, we even have it in a poster in the studio. Also, Lily Tomlin “I always wanted to be somebody, I just should have been more specific.” Here’s my latest collection of quotes. Grab whatever works for you!

    Tana Bevan - June 4, 2014 - 5:07 pm

Kim ~ These two quotes resonated:

    1. “When you become comfortable with uncertainty, infinite possibilities open up in your life. ~ Eckhart Tolle

    2. “To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.” Kurt Vonnegut.

Thank you so much for stopping by, sharing, and adding to my collection.

I have always collected quotes and love this! Here’s another Oscar Wilde for you:
“I have the simplest of tastes-I am always satisfied with the best.”
And I love this one from Helen Keller:
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they need to be felt with the heart.”

    Tana Bevan - June 5, 2014 - 10:21 am

Sheila~Seems quote-collecting is a popular past-time. There’s something about little words of wisdom, pearls of insight, or sillies that resonate. Oscar Wilde was accurate in that his tastes were simple, even though he only wanted the best. He realized while many equate simple with low-quality,that’s definitely not true. Thanks so much for sharing.

    Sheila Bergquist - June 5, 2014 - 10:17 pm

I think that with mantras becoming so popular these days, that shorter quotes become an inspiration in that area…I know they do for me.
Just signed up for Kims newsletter and am now going to read some posts on her site…I have found so many interesting people from here!
    Have a happy tomorrow!

    Tana Bevan - June 7, 2014 - 10:23 am

Sheila~Another possible reason quotes are so popular could be profound wisdom (humor, insight, observation, etc.) is distilled into its essential form and presented in small bites that are easily remembered. Whatever the reason, quotes are definitely here to stay. So glad you’re discovering other wonderful persons to follow. There are many out there, and many are truly inspirational. As always, thank you for tuning in.

    Shelley Sackier - June 9, 2014 - 8:41 am

Oh, Tana, there are so many marvelous words here from so many wonderful people. Thank you for posting some terrific quotes and also making me aware of several new ones I now have the hunger to hunt down.

    Tana Bevan - June 9, 2014 - 10:31 am

Shelley, It is always a delight to have you stop by. I agree, many marvelous words have been spoken by many wonderful people. And this delightful trend keeps on keeping on, both in written and spoken form. Woo-hoo!
